AT&T has issued a challenge to campuses across the country, to incorporate mobile learning, mobile identity, and student system integration into the classroom. Faculty and students must work together to come up with a concept, design, and implementation. They must also show the impact their application has on students and their academics, as well as its impact on the teaching process.

Instructional Media Services (IMS) has implemented a new online reservation system called Webcheckout. This system allows faculty, staff and students to browse pictures, descriptions and availability of equipment, schedule reservations and view the status of existing reservations.

In preparation for the new David Eccles School of Business complex, 11,000 campus telephone lines must be rerouted. Qwest will begin on approximately August 3 by laying new cable.

Networks are critical to the basic functions of each college and department at the University of Utah. Departments are finding it more difficult and expensive to manage their data network infrastructure. IT managers are finding themselves stretched or overwhelmed trying to do it all. In response to these needs, OIT Network Operations and Services (NetOps) is now providing 24/7/365 infrastructure monitoring and notification, problem resolution and disaster remediation services to departments.

To make information easier to distribute and more specific, Administrative Computing Services (an OIT department) has completed a project enabling campus housing administrators to send out phone, SMS & email alerts to their residents.

Starting September 23, 2009, The University of Utah will have new data breach notification requirements with regard to protected health information (PHI). The new University Rule requires reporting of a breach of PHI to the Health Sciences Help Desk (801-587-6000) or the Campus Health Desk (801-581-4000) as soon as possible, and no later than 24 hours after the discovery of the breach.

The University of Utah is now providing electronic W-2 forms thanks to the help of Administrative Computing Services (ACS). The Controller/Financial Management department, along with Financial and Business Services requested the new feature to better serve those at the U and to not only go green but save a little too.

When signing up for new classes, students often like to know what they are getting themselves into. Luckily course evaluations are filled out each term by students who have taken the class before. Administrative Computing Services (ACS) has now made this information even easier to access and understand.

Secure Instant Messaging is now available with UMail for U of U personnel. The And the Campus Wiki service makes it easy to collaborate, post information for internal and external groups, share documents and files, and view & control document versions.

The UIT Software Licensing office recently did an informal survey to see how they measure up to other schools across the country. The results show just how advanced their office is and how far they have come in the past few years.

Over the last two years, the University Information Technology (OIT), Administrative Computing Services (ACS) and the infrastructure division of Information Technology Services (ITS) joined together as a unit to increase cooperation and efficiency, and offer the best possible service to the University community. This organization will now have a name reflecting its mission and future growth: University Information Technology.

Solution antennae’s for AT&T are being placed in many buildings throughout campus to insure better cell service. The network will not be on air until all of the additional in-building solutions have been installed, but the completion date is expected the end of February.

The deadline to submit your additions, corrections, or deletions for the Qwest Dex 2010-2011 Salt Lake City White Pages is April 30, 2010. The University of Utah listings on pages 205-206 in the business section of the 2009-2010 White Pages have been cut back to one listing per department.

Thanks to new wireless radios across main campus and student housing, the wireless standard is now the fastest it’s ever been – up to 10 times faster. UIT Infrastructure Operations has been working on the campus wireless project since early last year, and just completed the first phase a month ahead of schedule.

On Thursday, April 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., recycling will be available for unwanted and obsolete electronics. You can dispose the items for free in the University Services Building parking lot (immediately west of the Huntsman Center). This is open to all Salt Lake City and County residents. This event is one of the many campus events celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

Over the last several years University Information Technology (UIT) has been working on improving cellular coverage on campus for all major carriers. UIT is conducting a survey to determine where coverage is lacking or non-existent per carrier.

With office equipment becoming more and more high-tech, it’s important to be aware of any risks that may come with it. Many of the photocopiers, printers and fax machines that are now in use have a hard drive or memory device of some type that files away the image of each document that ever comes through the machine.

UIT Projects & Applications (P&A) is always striving to create the best atmosphere for its customers. As we all know, the most important aspect for the customer is having what you need, when you need it. To better serve the end-users’ needs, UIT P&A now has all production databases available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

University Information Technology is pleased to announce that the first phase of the AT&T campus cellular network project is complete. Additional antennas have been distributed throughout the University and users should notice improved signal and service in many areas.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced on August 25th that the University of Utah and UEN were granted awards through the Research Infrastructure Improvement Inter-Campus and Intra-Campus Cyber Connectivity (RII C2) program.

The University operates many data centers and computer rooms throughout campus. Most of these facilities are aging and have, in many cases, been outgrown. A new data center facility will help change all that.

For the past year UIT has been working on an upgrade to the CMS billing system. We are pleased to announce that starting in October, your monthly bills will be available on the upgraded version of CMS, which is now referred to as UIT Pinnacle Billing.
